Visit of the IPE RAS delegation to Beijing (China)

Category: Общие, Научная жизнь

Invited by Head of Institute of Earthquake Forecasting, China Earthquake Administration (IEF CEA) Prof. Zhongliang Wu, on October 22 – 28, 2018 the IPE RAS delegation visited Beijing (China). The delegation included Vladimir Kamzolkin, Deputy Director of IPE RAS, and Alexey Zavyalov, Head of Laboratory of Seismic Hazard (302), National Representative of Russia in the European Seismological Commission.

Before the official program started, our colleagues had met the old friends of our Institute – Prof. Zhaocheng Zhang and his wife, Prof. Wei Zhang, who were students at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Department of Geology, in the mid-1950’s and were at the origins of the Soviet-Chinese cooperation in the field of earthquake prediction in the 1980’s. Chinese colleagues showed guests an ancient Chinese ceramic seismometer. The meeting was held in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and was found to be a good opening of the trip.

The official program included participation in the International Symposium “Deep Earth Exploration and Practices” (DEEP-2018) and a visit to the School of Earth and Space Sciences of Peking University (SESS PKU) and the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting, China Earthquake Administration, (IEF CEA) for a discussion of extending scientific cooperation within the framework of earthquake prediction research program on two seismological test sites in China, announced in May 2018.

Currently, establishing previously strong links in Earth sciences is a topical question for Russian research and for Chinese science that is aimed at expanding scientific cooperation and integration into the global scientific community. That was highlighted by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Natural Resources officials in their welcome address at the International Symposium DEEP-2018 opening ceremony. DEEP-18 gave its participants a rare opportunity to build international cooperation in Earth sciences and became a platform for exchanging ideas on the studies of the deep structure of the lithosphere, discussing the current state of research in processes inside the Earth, and expanding knowledge in practical applications.

The DEEP-2018 was organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, as well as the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), China Geological Survey (CGS) and China Earthquake Administration (CEA) with the support of the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), International Lithosphere Program (ILP), International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and several state key laboratories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: State Key Laboratory of Lithospheric Evolution, State Key Laboratory of Isotope Geochemistry, State Key Laboratory of Mineral Deposits Research.

Many reports at DEEP-2018 were dedicated to ongoing research projects on the deep structure of China and South China Sea territory. Walter Mooney, Co-Convener of the session “From continental rifting to formation of ocean basins”, Jeffery Freymuller, Co-Convener of the session “Linking surface processes to deep earth dynamics”, Richard Ernst, and other renowned scientists gave presentations as well as honored Chinese colleagues.

Prof. Alexey Zavyalov presented a talk “Deviation from the Omori Law as the Result of the Trigger Impact of Round-the-World Surface Seismic Waves on the Source of Strong Earthquakes” in the session “Seismicity, volcanism and deep processes”. These researches have been carried out under his supervision in the framework of RFBR projects recently.

Another well-known Russian seismologist Prof. Vladimir Kossobokov (IEPT RAS) gave a talk “Seismic Hazard Assessment Problem in a Big Data World” in the same session.

Dr. Vladimir Kamzolkin, Deputy Director of IPE RAS presented research results on the topic “Main Features of the Structure and Age of the Crystalline Basement of the Fore Range of the Northern Caucasus”.

Then IPE RAS delegation visited the School of Earth and Space Sciences of Peking University (SESS PKU). At the meeting with the head of the School - Yu Liu a Memorandum of Understanding between the School and the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth was signed and possible areas for further cooperation were outlined. Afterwards, Prof. Yanbin Wan, who had visited the IPE RAS in August 2018, took our colleagues for a walk around the campus to see the sights.

Finally, Russian scientists gave lectures for students and graduate members of SESS PKU. Alexey Zavyalov spoke about research presented at the DEEP-2018 previously, his lecture brought on great interest and lively discussions about the physical mechanism of the round-the-world seismic echo effect. After his presentation, Prof. Zavyalov continued the dialogue with students, answered the questions, and recommended special literature.

«My lecture caused less resonance because the audience consisted of geophysicists only. Questions about seismicity of the Greater Caucasus and about problems of high-pressure rocks were asked. Then we discussed my report with Prof. Jenuan Ning, Head of the Geophysical Department of the School» - Dr. Kamzolkin shared impressions at the Peking University. – «In general, the Peking University structure is similar to the American system: the university consists of schools divided into several departments of different sizes. So, SESS PKU includes geological, geophysical, and geodesic departments.»

The final part of the visit to the Peking University was held as a discussion session in a relaxed atmosphere, and young researchers from the Geophysical Department were invited. «The issues of cooperation were discussed in more detail, both sides noted the importance of joint projects carried out by young scientists. The history of geophysical sciences in China and Russia and the prospects for their development were also discussed. After the meeting, we presented souvenirs to the Chinese colleagues, who, in turn, invited us to the symposium next year» - concluded Dr. Kamzolkin.

On October 27, the last day in Beijing, the IPE RAS delegation visited the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting, China Earthquake Administration (IEF CEA) and participated in a workshop with presentations “Algorithm “Map of Expected Earthquakes” (MEE): Summary of the 30-years Testing Worldwide and Latest Findings” (Alexey Zavyalov) and “Main Features of the Structure and Age of the Crystalline Basement of the Fore Range of the Northern Caucasus” (Vladimir Kamzolkin).

Zhongliang Wu, Head of IEF CEA, and Vladimir Kamzolkin, Deputy Director of IPE RAS, signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the end of the meeting. Prof. Jiadong Qian, the coordinator of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the field of earthquake prediction in the 1990s, was an honorary participant in the signing ceremony.
Zhongliang Wu gave an address about the importance of cooperation and the rich history of scientific relations between our organizations. Ke Sun, Deputy Director of IEF CEA, also expressed his hope for high effectiveness of cooperation. After that, a ceremony of exchange of souvenirs was held.
